I hope everyone had a safe New Year's eve. I spent my eve day shopping at the mall. I met a friend for coffee and it was a good day all around. But I learned something very interesting about myself. Shy as I am, it all goes to the wall when it comes to promoting the Deadlies! I have had a bit of practice now since I have visited a couple of a book stores to show them the book and ask them to carry a few copies. I have stopped flinching while I am talking anyway.
As I said, I met a friend for coffee and she had asked for a book to give to her niece. I said no problem, though I have only two or three left and am supposed to be using them for advertising purposes. What better way to advertise than to have people seen reading the book? So, I have no problem giving up the last couple of copies. But when I met my friend she was carrying this dinky little purse (for those of you who know Susan, you know this is unusual, she is usually carrying a purse that defies the term and more resembles a hockey bag.) Anyway, I told her that I would take care of the book and shoved it into my shopping bag.
We continued on our way, doing some shopping and browsing and we wandered into Green Earth (one of our favourite stores) and while she was looking at some stuff, I went over to the figurines. As I have made it my mission to find some "Deadlies", I was excited that they had some goth angels with black wings but they were all female. Okay, there is one female Deadly. The rest are boys. I have a problem. Well, more than one, but we'll let that pass for now. So while I am scowling at the figurines for being all girls, a clerk comes over and asks if she can help me. Whether she thought I looked like I needed help or whether she was concerned for the safety of the girls I don't know. I asked if they had any "boy" goth angels. She said no and started to tell me that the artist only makes girls.
And I don't know what came over me, but the next thing I knew I was pulling my book out of my bag and showing it to her, explaining why I am looking for boy angels and not girls. She took the book and, bless her heart, she looked interested though I am sure she thought I a few feathers short of a full wing span. She turned over the book and asked about the educational assistant thing and seemed to think that I am some kind of English major. I explained my job and I told her where I work, but it draws a blank. She's not from around here. She asked a few questions about the publishing company and it turns out that she wants to get into publishing herself (not the writing end, the other). We had a nice chat during which I purchased one of the figurines (not the Deadly though) and I shoved the book back into the shopping bag, a little embarrassed but not enough that I won't do it again given the opening.
Well, everyone, that was my last adventure of 2010. Here is hoping that there are more exciting ones to come in 2011. Be safe, be happy, and best of all, enjoy the adventures to come!
